2012 was a monumental year for LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care policy with the Australian Federal Government recognising LGBTI older people as a 'special needs' group. This recognition was formalised through the LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care strategy, meaning that specific funds and service requirements will be attached to providing care to LGBTI people.

The launch of the strategy took place at the home of Val's Cafe, La Trobe University city campus and it was attended by the the Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Mark Butler MP.

Val's Cafe was involved in the community consultations and sits as the co-chair on LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care advisory committee.
